Fixation

I could lay a flower down at your door
And never show up again
I could write you a letter to explain
Why I'll never live up to your expectations
I could fill a thousand pages with
My faults and flaws, and still you wouldn't see them
I could wear you down to your bare breath
With a single whispered goodbye
But who am I, to kill the sky
Who am I, to burn in your eyes
To counter time, I swallowed seconds
To deflower life, I unbuttoned her dress
And now you see, the monster I am
And now you believe, oh how you ran
So quickly, it seems, there's nothing in me
That meets your approval
I could lay this shit at your door
Ring the bell and disappear into the world
I could write my own obituary
And still you wouldn't weep at the words
I could fill a thousand shot glasses
And still I couldn't forget this
I could tear you down to your bare skin
And still I wouldn't be sated
But who am I, to live a lie
Who am I, to burn love down
To its filtered ends, choke on the heart
Of the matter, this flattery will get me
Nowhere, who am I, anyways
To stand here and argue with fate
Instead I walk the miles away
And find myself, every morning
At your door, who am I
To go too far, without your blade
In my back.
