September's Messenger

Every salvageable breath wasted
On dreams that seem so tasteless
On words chosen to replace this
Or a kiss to consummate it
So we wake from deepest sleep
Lungs struggling to keep pace
With your heartbeat
Eyes resisting the urge to concede
To my face
We would run away together
Chase the day forever
Trace our names in the leaves
And watch the wind carry it all away from here
Oceans of cold water and sea shells
Lining the beaches where we fell
Make this a promise over all else
A promise that their screams cannot quell
In dreams, the saying used to be
That sound is a remnant of waking sleep
And words spoken are words chosen
To carry on forgotten conclusions
Were we to sleep here forever
Then the Septembers would fall with the weight of a page
'Til some day love came to tuck us into our graves.
