The lights hung low from
Steel beams
Glared at us from behind
Plastic screens
The television glows
Silently
Spared our fickle minds
Her muted screams
So we sat in the dark and played hearts
'Fore we went out back and played spades
Now here we are with a deck of cards
That dealt us into an early grave
Her eyelids hung low from
Lack of sleep
As irises, we lived behind the veil of
Our dreams
Our hands stained gold
From the alchemy
That made a home
From a wealth of nothing
And we sat in the dark and played cards
'Fore we went out back and played the stars
Though who we were isn't where we are
We'd never tell the two apart.
