Collision

"Do you wish me dead?"
Her smile hung crooked cross her face
Eyes dressed in the twilight between high and
Coming down
A flash of silver as the knife nicked her forearm
And she offered up her trickling flesh
Giggled mad as she pressed it to my lips
"Do you wish me dead?"
The words danced circles through the air
Grew fat on my own intoxications
As they chewed through my thoughts
The dim glow of dashboard lights turned cherub to
Skeleton
A hazy introduction to the taste of her
As she coughed up cigarette and liqour
"Do you wish me dead?"
Her tiny clock hands pressed my foot down
Faster we drove, 'til the whole world was composed
Of soft edges and phantom lights, who scried into
Our recesses
Who found wanting, our obsessions
Who ground violently, our impulses
'Til life was the only lie we had left
And reality cowered in the rearview
I knew you, straight through
I turned off the lights and left the hospital room
Wondering what memories still gasp for breath
Within you.
