Ariadne's Prologue

Ariadne gave her heart away
When men were still boys
Solemnly swore to keep her faith
In that ever-swaying emotion
To stand by him through train-wreck and
Plainness
Against her better judgement
And he took his shiny new toy
And played with it for days
Til the paint had lost it's luster
And the edges began to gray
And Ariadne still stood
Alone in the chests of dead men
Held onto love longer
Than she should
In the name of keeping
A promise
For still he brought her everywhere
Trapped in a suitcase
Labeled
'Yesteryear'
While new-model planes
And train sets kindled flames
She knew once burned for her
Ariadne held onto her child
Until the only feeling that rang clear
Was accepting her abandonment
Amidst the toys he no longer
Touched
Many times the suitcase
Opened
Many times she threatened to run
Yet her pleas fell on deaf ears
Until he discovered her
Gone
And in her place
A toy note
That would play cross his mind
Forever
It said
"I loved you with every
Speck of life
That you slowly worked
Away
I held on with every
Knit and knot
Even as my heart began
To fray
I thank you for those moments
When I
Was the toy you never
Locked away
And I hate you for the years
You've kept me in
Your cage."

Ariadne never once looked back
But steeled her heart and hardened
Her hands
Ariadne never believed
In second chances
And knows, even as a man
He does not
Deserve it
And now that boy
Has become a man
And keeps no toys
'Cept her note
And now Ariadne
Has become his chance
At salvation from his
Depression
Ariadne never says his name
But hides it in every
Line she writes
Cause she was long ago taught
That memories have their place
And that place is best kept
A secret.
