Down Above Us

Cast upon these walls
Our shadows beckoned us
To brick and mortar right over
Our flaws
Shackled to our thoughts
Our chains destined us
To rest upon our world of
Things lost

And no sooner did we reach our cabins
'Fore the innkeeper knocked upon our doors
And once upon our easy chairs
We found him that much easier to ignore

Laid upon our hearts
These weights sunk us
Into a sea of songs and scars
A lead-end for our arms
So bound to every ink-stained idea
We walked along our wooded streams
Til we found oursleves floundering in our bathtubs
Where slung mud kept our tides from draining

And no sooner did we reach our islands
'Fore the natives had us on a spit
And once upon the warming fires
We gave up, and they dove right in

Saved from self-defeat
Will we make a night of days
Where the sun would guide us
And serve to remind us
Of the folly of our ways
Or will we dance with our bare feet
Pirouettes and one-two steps
On the coals we insist they keep
Bathed in lust and heat
'Til we're saved by our lovely lady
Death.
