Demanding Life

"Every man has the right to risk his own life in order to save it."
   -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

 It is a brave man
 That advances through the shadows
 A depraved man
 Who stays by his candle
 Any longer than is required
To commit the moment to memory
 It is a strong man
That carries the weight of the world
 And a weak man
 Who expects the world
 To carry him through
 His own trials
It is a triumph of the heart
When a man can come so far as
 To begin again anew
 It is in error only
When a man allows his fear
 To conquer his dreams
It seems we've only ever been
As far as the fences that keep us in
But to be a great man
Is to be a visitor to life
 And not a resident
 It is a wise man
 Who neither leads nor follows
 But goes everywhere he can
 With eyes affixed firmly
 On the road ahead.
