Scavengers

Somewhere between the stars and eyes
She sits, fixated
By pot-holed skies
Making wishes every time
Something dies
And here between our hearts and minds
We've ordered our arteries to quit
Keeping time, we've boarded our thoughts
Let them learn us just like
A language, word us just like
This sentence, where we keep begging
Forgiveness
And somewhere between our rights and crimes
We've lost the fight to keep out the cries
And they've got our scent, keep coming up from
The pavement, the only way this
Can end
And only days like this can be spent
The currency we use to purchase our
Forgetfulness
But not I, she says, not like this
And somewhere inside those behind-her-back fists
She holds the key to her prison
A lover on the other hand
That she would always choose, never open
These doors, when we could be locked tight in
This devil's dance
This requiem for blood-stained hands
She bathes me in
Her sinking thoughts
Lays me in
Her cribbed halls
We've made a mansion of our cells
A heaven of our hells
And now, where we dwell
I can't tell
Where we fell
Is just as well, cause somewhere between the stars and eyes
Of others, we died
And maybe when they closed their fists tight
And made a wish against punctured skies
Just maybe they found what we delighted
In losing
Maybe they were granted that second chance to fly
And now they're up above us
And we're waiting for them to fall
And now they're left with love while
We're left with what they've lost.
