Cinders

Kiss'd flesh
She is
A dagger in your chest
The warmth on your lips
When she whispers
And blessed
She's been
A breath compressed
The invitation to address
To captivate the audience
When she flickers

So mad men we will be
Til the bitter end
And halfway home we'll think
Of going back again
To where her tongue slid so discreet
Along your best hid thoughts
Where your lungs swore "Mercy me"
And your breath was lost

And burning we have ever been
Just friends until the sun turns in
And when the shadows chilled your skin
Her touch would wake you once again

So made men we will be
Til the sun comes up again
And someday we will speak
In the present tense
Where her mouth would shape the world you loved
And her eyes would burn in yours
Where her touch would surely light you up
And leave your cool heart scorched

Cause kiss'd flesh
She is
A dagger in your head
The swagger in your step
When she beckons
And so blessed
We've been
To share this exhaled life
To stare with hell-froze eyes
Toward the warming fires
Of Heaven.
