Ariadne's Return

Like any drug
You ever had to shake off too soon
She left you glass-eyed and
Empty-headed
Wondering when you'd be
Alone again
Like any love
You knew that it was doomed
When your heartbeat picked up pace and
Began its descent
Comforting though it felt, she left you
Broken in
Like any sanctuary
You ever thought to escape to
She left you hiding in plain sight and
Mid-day
Rewinding e'ery mild disagreement
You ever had

And Ariadne was an open book
And Ariadne was a baited hook
Ariadne won't you take a look
At all the foundations you have shook

Like any sentence
You ever regretted speaking
She left you biting her tongue and
Hoping
This could not go wrong, though inevitably
It did
Like any pretense
You ever imagined keeping
She left you abandoning common sense and
Self preservation
Climbing around in burning buildings, wondering why you couldn't
Breathe
Like any love
She called it poetic license
When she swore she'd stay, of course
We didn't mean it
She'd say, how could anyone ever understand love
Anyways

Ariadne, you're an open book
And I believe I've claimed my page
Ariadne, you're a baited hook
And I believe in the one that got away
Oh Ariadne, would you take a look
At all the hearts that you have shook

Oh, Ariadne the way you return
I'd swear you never went away
Ariadne, you are the devil spurned
Yet an angel
Every time I look your way.
